Landscape is a telescopic word. For centuries it meant a big view: ambitious mountains or lazy hills, sand dunes cleverly arranged by wind, a phalanx of trees marching sturdily into the distance. More recently landscape has also meant little views, snippets and details, at least when applied to images. If you venture into the woods and bend close enough to a rock and its clinging lichen to see nothing else, you do not exclaim, ''What a lovely landscape!'' Landscapes are immensely popular subjects for photography. Standing in a beautiful landscape, we can easily see and feel its beauty. Capturing its beauty, however, is a much harder process. |
