Leonbatista Alberti's beautiful facade for Sta. Maria Novella was built between 1456-70.
The mathematical proportions and design, using volutes to bridge an awkward gap between the tall level of the nave and lower side aisles,
became a formula copied in church architecture for many years thereafter.
The church has been affiliated for centuries with a hospital and the famous S. M. Novella Farmacia which still makes beautiful products for body and home.
