Louvre - View of Richelieu Wing and Carousel Arch.jpg

This shot of the Richelieu wing of the Louvre was taken out of a window in the Grand Gallerie of Italian Paintings in the Denon wing of the Louvre.
The Louvre has three wings, Richelieu, Denon, and Sully, each housing different cultures and periods of art.

The "Carousel Arch" in the foreground marks the entrance to the Tuileries Gardens, and is on a direct alignment with the Arc de Triomphe at the end of the Champs -Elysees.
The Tuileries is a pleasant place to stroll, and a respite from the crowds and traffic on the street.

At the far end of the Tuileries are two small but elegant museums, the Jeu de Paume, which originally housed tennis courts iin the 1800's.
It was used to store confiscated Jewish art during WWII, and finally became Paris's Impressionist museum until 1986,
when all the paintings were moved to the Musee d'Orsay.
The Jeu de Paume is now a repository for film art and photography.

The other small museum at the end of the Tuileries is the l"Orangerie, which is newly renovated with beautiful lighting.
It houses the very famous Monet Water Lily series in two oval rooms, along with a major collection of early 20th c. painting.
