Donaello's polychrome wood Mary Magdelene (ca. 1453-56) , now housed in the Museo del Duomo in Florence, departs from the general classical tradition of the sculptor's other works.
She is shown here from the rear, clothed only in her long hair as a penitent in her old ages.. The wooden sculpture was damaged in the 1966 flood in Florence,
and during the restoration, original painted flesh tones and gilded highlights in the hair were discovered under the damage of the centuries.
