"DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WIVB) - A major fire is raging in Dunkirk at this hour. The Masonic Temple, a 4-story building on Central Avenue, has gone up in flames. Smoke was first seen at the rear of the building and reports are now saying that the fire is spreading to the business district.
The fire began around 5:30 p.m. Only a few workers and a gymnastics class were in the building at the time the fire started. The 36 children in the gymnastics class made it out safely. The surrounding buildings were successfully evacuated.
Route 5 is closed in both directions between Route 60 (Main Street) and Route 394 (North Portage Road) in the City of Dunkirk because of the fire. The reason the road needs to be closed is the fire companies have used up all of the city's water pressure. They are now resorting to pumping water three blocks from Lake Erie to the fire to try and battle the blaze. Due to all of the hoses running across the road, Route 5 needed to be closed."
