STATUE OF RICK HUSBAND IN THE RICK HUSBAND AIRPORT

Amarillo, TX

Rick Husband was the Shuttle Commander who died on the Space Shuttle Columbia on February 1, 2003 during re-entry. He was born and raised in Amarillo, TX. They have erected a statue in his honor. I had to stop and take the picture as he is pointing to the heavens which he loved in more ways than one. I'll never forget the sonic boom I thought I heard. The walls in my house actually shook and I ran outside to see a visible line of smoke in the sky. I wasn't aware that it was Columbia breaking apart. About 20 minutes later, I knew what happened after hearing it on the news. Was a very sad day for everyone. He'll forever be missed.

Nicely done Cindi. I also remember that moment. I was driving up to Big Bear when they reported that the shuttle was a minute late. I thought this is not good, might as well had said a week late because they have these activities scheduled down to the split second. The same feelings ran through me as when the Challenger blew up during launch.

I can't believe it has been over 4 years... feels just like yesterday.

There are events in life that are so seared into our memories that we can remember exactly where we were when they occurred. The disintegration of the shuttle upon re-entry was one for me, because the trail in the sky was so visible. I like how you've abstracted this statue and used the sky and clouds behind to emphasize this man's life long love of space and adventure. Very nicely done, Cindi.
