Carol Black

After Central I went to Memphis State and graduated in 1967 with a degree in biology. I worked in the pharmacology department at the University of Tennessee Medical School for awhile. I then married James Gandy, had two boys and then settled down to raise them.

The children years flew by, during which time our sons, Jim and Steve took karate lessons. I got tired of sitting and waiting for them; so I took classes, too. I got my black belt in 1981, and that somehow segued into weight lifting, and so by the mid-80s I was both strong and tough! But not any more.

During the 90s to help me get over my shyness and to see if I could really do it, I pestered casting directors and got parts as an extra in several TV shows and movies filmed in the Memphis area.

During the filming of The Client I realized that one of the actors was Bill Sanderson (CHS '62). Unfortunately, I didn't get to speak to him. The last thing I did was this fall when I was called to be a stand in for the little boy in John Grisham's A Painted House, which aired recently. That was fun.

Our oldest son, Jim, Jr. is married and has given us our three beautiful granddaughters, Natalie (8), Gillian (6), and Lydia (4). He is a graphic designer for Ducks Unlimited in Memphis. Our other son Steve is single and living in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He has a degree in broadcasting and works for Focus on the Family.

My husband, Jim, retired from Kellogg's about four years ago, got sick of retirement, and is now working again full time for an engineering firm, which does work for Kellogg's. I work part time at Nomadic Notions, a local bead store here in Memphis. I enjoy designing jewelry, knitting, gardening, reading, needlepoint, etc. I don't do karate any more, but I still lift weights. I am a Christian and listen to taped sermons from Berean Memorial Church in Irving, Texas www.berean-church.org. I'm having a wonderful time, and looking forward to what the next years will bring
