This gallery is the fruit of a 3-day tour of Malaysia with fellow Pbase photographers Phil Douglis & Tim May. It was the 2nd leg of our 3-country tour after Singapore and before China in September 2007. As we drove up north from Singapore, we visited the charming towns of Muar and Malacca which were rich in character and history, before heading to the big capital city of Kuala Lumpur (KL) where I live. KL is like many other cities in some ways, but there are pockets of culturally rich and diverse locations to explore such as Batu Caves-unusual Hindu temples within limestone caves, and Kampung Baru, the last Malay village in the heart of urban KL. Being a Malaysian, I am quite familiar with these places and it wasn't my intention to show what they looked like. My images focus on the little details and stories that moved me along the way.
Our gratitude goes to John in Singapore who recommended that we detour off the highway to see Muar, which was a new and wonderful discovery for all of us. And lastly, thank you so much to Phil & Tim for sidetracking from China to make a special visit to Malaysia and for allowing me to show them my home country.

Now that so many comments are starting to accumulate below your images, you can take a renewed sense of pride in this effort, Celia. The comments themselves are substantive and greatly enhance the value of your images as expression. They are a joy to read. What a spectacular gallery, Celia. To Tim and myself, Malaysia was an exotic destination, filled with unusual subject matter. To you and Chor, our wonderful hosts, Malaysia is home. It is not easy finding incongruities in places that you can take for granted. Yet you do just that here, again and again. Your images function as more than a travelogue. They do not intend to show us what Malaysia and Malaysians look like. Rather, they tell us what Malaysia is, and who its people are. And that is the essence of expressive travel photography. You are a brilliant communicator, Celia, a born story-teller, a true artist. I have left about 30 comments for you here -- enjoy. Thank you so much for hosting us, and for including so many images of us in this gallery. It was worth waiting ten months to see it.

Celia, Glad you had a ball in your round with Phil and Tim. Was a pleasure knowing you and you have captured beautiful faces of where we live. One day again I will attempt a journey to capture the secrets that is often missed by the naked eye. Did I confuse you? LOL.....Rgds always..
