Cactus
by Doug Smith

Sharp enough?
Natural window light with foil reflector fill

My daughter teaches kindergarten. This was an end of year teacher gift. My wife took it from her because that child has such a touch with plants that dandelions die in her yard without weedkiller. I thought it was pretty so took the image and made it my POTW for Digital-Rebels group. When our daughter saw it she asked if I realized the flower was glued on and made of paper. As a matter of fact I had seen something that looked like hot melt glue but thought it was some natural structure. It is quite clear in the photo that the 'flower' is glued on. Embarassed here.

Glue? What glue? That's just cactus juice. I don't think anyone would've noticed had you not said anything. (Remember, even the greats of photography used to move things around to create more of a "scene" in their stills.) Nice sharp image & great subject.

Doug, you blew it... if you hadn't of mentioned the glue,
I won't have noticed it as such. Still, it's a sharp shot.

Beautiful lighting. Appears a tiny tad oversharpened on my LCD.

Really well taken..

For Jim: I replaced it with one at 133K which wrecks the background smoothness by adding JPG noise. This has one 12mm Kenko tube.

For Dawn: I could not figure out how to crop this or the longer version I shot other than bulls eye style. I suppose I could do an offset version with a lot more background but then the picture would be the bokeh rather than the flower. In smaller versions, I lose the flower texture.

I think it looks great. Love the softness of the flower compared to the cactus.

Incredibly sharp to my eyes!

That's sharp! Did you use an extension tube? Can you tell any difference if you reduce the file to less then 150kb?
Ron Crain13-Jun-2006 03:20
Ouch! Yes, I'd say it's sharp enough!

colours, texture and bokeh are all great--I'm just not a fan of the centered image usually. But that's a personal opinion, and this is a very nicely executed image.
