Doug Smith

Hibiscus Sawfly - Atomacera decepta - adult

Handheld 50mm lens using all three Kenko tubes makes this a bit more than 1:1 since the subject is only about 7mm long. Focus could be better but I have failed to capture this one using a tripod (they are not much for staying in one place for long). The adults are rather pretty but the transparent green larva of this species can strip a large hardy Hibiscus in no time.

Nice clarity but compsitionally a little flat. I'd try a 30 degree clockwise rotation on the original and then crop so that the leaf runs diagonally.

Pretty shot. I like the detail of the bug and the leaf he's one with the plain green background. That lens is on my shopping list. I'll have to learn about using tubes. Very cool.
