The old Grand Dame of the turn of the century (19th->20th) had become a musty old firetrap by the 1980's.
It finally closed, someone bought it, and tore it down.
Now a cry went up from this patrician summer community called Watch Hill!
"No! No! You cannot destroy the Ocean House! It is a landmark, part of our history!"
Money talks.
And so it was that the Ocean House was rebuilt, an exact replica of itself.
It is now in full operation as an upscale hotel,
a member of the Relais et Chateaux group.
