Photos of a few days at Ang Khang Nature Resort in the hills of northern Thailand near the Thai-Myanmar border. The resort is next to the Royal Ang Khang Research Station, sometimes called the Royal Project. Founded to help local people grow crops other than opium poppies, it sprawls through a valley next to the village of Doi Ang Khang. The Nature Resort appeals to stressed Bangkok yuppies and anyone wanting relief from the humidity of lower altitudes. Getting there requires a 3-hour drive from Chiang Mai. The road through the hills is steep and features a series of challenging switchback turns.
At Ang Khang I explored the village and rode a mule through the research station. Other activities available include walking and birdwatching. I also went to Fang as a day trip.
When I departed, I took a minor, alternative route back to Chiang Mai and passed through jungle-clad hills and villages.
