Star Nosed Mole

So how often do you actually see a mole? I see the damage, but never the mole. Anyway, I was wandering around my property and went down by the creek since I'd had another big rain and I wanted to check out the creek. I always wander with my camera. Lately, I've been watching for butterflies. I looked down the woods and here's this little black blob. I thought it was a dead animal, but I could see it breathing. After watching it I realized it was a mole, especially when I saw the tentacles by its mouth. I had to use a flash to get any image at all since it was very dark. I actually moved a piece of grass that was over it and didn't bother it a bit. Moles are quite blind but I thought maybe it could feel the movement. My mammal book says "This is the only mammal that has a nose surrounded by fingerlike, fleshy projections (22 tentacles), giving it the appearance of a star. It often appears above ground or in water and is a good swimmer." It's pretty cool isn't it? I feel very privileged to have seen it. I'm glad I had my camera with me.
