Lapu-Lapu

Lapu-lapu was the local chieftain who along with his men killed Ferdinand Magellan as he landed on the shores of Mactan Island, Cebu.
He along with his community was the first in the South-East Asian region to challenge a western colonial power.

Food for Thought: why is Magellan immortalized in the history books as the first man to circumnavigate
the globe when in actual fact he died HALFWAY through the voyage?!! Hmmm ...

Agrifina Circle whre the monument is located is a contested part of Luneta Park. But, if you do go inside the premises of the park you would see a lot of heroes lined up that was erected with no objection from the same institution opposing the Lapu Lapu monument - National Historical Institution. Politics? Palakasan? Kapalpakan. Please choose

Thanx for sharing the info, "laguna". I remember reacting similarly way back then.

Perhaps this monumental image of Lapu-lapu was put in Rizal Park precisely to ward off
any future colonials who may have the wrong idea of coming back to reclaim our precious land! :-)

this monument was commissioned by then secretary of tourism richard gordon...i dont know his reason why he wanted to erect another monument in luneta which was a clear violation of law that provides that only rizal monument shall be erected in luneta...anyway, the artist is sajid imao, the son of national artist for sculpture abdulmari imao....
