M42, the Great Orion Nebula, and M43 just to the right of the dark cloud in the center. The cluster of young stars in the center of the nebula is overexposed in order to show more nebulosity at the edges. At the lower right of the picture NGC1977, the Running Man Nebula, is just barely visible. The purple glow around the stars is partly due to imperfect focus and tracking, but mostly because the telescope is not apochromatic.
