Towers Beach August 24/2006

Right around the corner from Wreck Beach (Vancouver's Clothing-Optional Beach), sits Towers Beach. Named for the two concrete towers that were built during the War facing out into Georgia Strait. They were manned constantly, looking west for a Japanese invasion that never came. While I was there, I thought of the soldiers that sat in the towers, machine guns ready to fire upon the Japanese Zeros that would signal an invasion. It never happened. After the war, they were abandoned and have sat for decades, silent sentinels forever peering west. We used to climb inside and party in them as teenagers, but they've now been sealed and cannot be entered. This hasn't stopped many a graffitti artist, however. It's a beautiful beach that takes a bit of a hike to reach.
