I bought this lens after selling my Canon 28-300mm "L" lense earlier this year because it was too heavy as a "carry-all-the-time" lens. Well, I am gobsmacked.... the VC Tamron is quite fantastic. I have only had it a week, but I used it for 2 studio model photoshoots the other day and was surprised at two things in particular: One, it focuses accurately, consistently, quickly and in dim light very well indeed. Second, the images are tack sharp and nicely constrasty. A very pleasant surprise - the little "compromise lens" is a brilliant performer and not a compromise at all! I am delighted.

I have had this lens for about 9 months now and I like it so much that I just don't take it off. I have used it for both scenic and macro and it works great for both. I currently have two groups online to view.

Not all of the shots are with my Canon 20D and this lens but they are all with a Canon camera.

I got this lens to use on my D40. I have the Nikon 18-200mm VR, but it was not long enough at the long end for wildlife stuff. I was thinking about the Nikon 70-300mm VR, but it was to long of a lens and 70mm was not wide enough. So I tried the Tamron and liked it's compact size and wider short end. The VC works just as good if not better then Nikons VR. The focus motor is not super fast, but is on par with the 18-200mm Nikon speed.

Pro's: Compact size, VC, light wight, Wider on the short end, does not creep, has zoom lock.
Con's: Focus motor is noisy (but so is my 18-200 Nikon), Focus ring moves, stiff zoom ring.

Overall a nice walk around lens for your D40. I may sell my 18-200mm VR I like this Tamron that much.

Check this link out for pic's I made with this lens.
