I was an SLR afficionado and did not go into digital till 2003. The Olympus C5050Z was my first, and so far, only, digital camera. I just love taking pictures of our events for posterity. It serves my purpose very well. Only used the fine mode of picture taking. Still learning its many features. Not scary to use at all. Makes taking pictures very easy and a pleasant experience.

An Olympus classic with its fast f1.8 lens. Fairly good optics. Some barreling at times in WA and CA at high contrast. Used for the America 24/7 books which show its capabilities for professional photos and print. Using an adaptor, lenses and filters can be added. I've had mine for 4 years and no problems whatsoever and I've even dropped it twice. It's built like a tank.

A good camera though manufactured with a rather shoddy mode dial which breaks off very easily. The lense barrel is sturdier than that of the C4040Z which popped out of its' track very easily. The swing-out LCD screen is VERY handy, especially when trying to get shots from very low or over the heads of a crowd. Uses three different flash media: Compact Flash, SmartMedia and xDisk (you can load dual cards, but only in CF/SM or CF/XD combos) - and this allows you to expand the number of shots you take. Does have the capability of capturing QuickTime videos with sound, but user is extremely limited in what they can do in this mode.

A very good camera, perfectly designed for those starting out in digital photography. Not too bad for intermediates either, though for the hardcore hobbyist, a digital SLR may be more suitable.
