Superb portrait lens, sharp enough even when wide open. I took some recent shots with this lens, and the Nikon 180mm F2.8 and the Nikon 50mm F1.4 in natural light. The 85mm and 180mm were shot at F2.8 aperture, with the Nikon 50mm F1.4 shot at wide open(F1.4). A great, useful lens. Good for available light portraits with decent bokeh, event photography, and indoor and nighttime sports. Prone to glare...its only bad habit.

I have tested a brand new lens on D80. The large aperture performance was not impressive to me. At f5.6, it was getting close to f5.6 of Nikon 50mm f1.8, but slightly lower constrast, also seemed slightly lower resolution.

If you don't need the speed or can't afford the expensive 85mm f1.4 Nikkor lens or both, then this lens may be the right one for you. It took Nikon a while to produce a superb compact 85mm lens, but this time they finally got it right. Without a doubt, this is a fine portrait lens for photographing head-and-shoulder portraits (The only lens which is optically better is Nikon's legendary 105mm f2.5 Nikkor lens, and its close optical twin, the 105mm f2.8 Micro Nikkor.). Since the 105mm f2.5 Nikkor lens doesn't have an autofocus version, then this might be the perfect moderate telephoto lens for owners of Nikon autofocus SLR cameras. I'm thinking of getting a 85mm not sure I should I get the 1.8 or the 1.4 what are your thoughts.
