After a years of using non-L league of EF lenses (among 50/1.4, 85/1.8, 50/1.8, 28-105, 24-85, 70-300 etc.etc), got this one in 2008, found in ex+ condition for 850$. So may i say "you got an L". Colors rendering, sharpness, solid build are superior, since 1993 when it was born, feels like it has its own soul, and its NOT big as you may imagine. I think this one (and other L's) is a product of "Diamond Industry of Japan", rest of EF belong to "Bottles&Cans Industry". No doubt.....if you see one just infront of your eye - run and get it.

Absolute my favorite lens for the short stuff (use it on a 1D) Very usable at F2.8, stopped down at 4 or 5.6 amazing sharp, great colors and nice bokeh.

Best zoom.
Ever.
(well, for a canon ... OK, OK, so maybe the 70-200 just beats it, but only just)

My favorite lens, sharp, great colour rendering, super sharp edge to edge, extremely flare resistant particularly if you use the lens hood that, because of the lenses "reverse zoom" action (it gets longer at shorter focal lengths), stays "perfect" throughout it's full range. It's also fast for a zoom (2.8) and best yet is reasonably affordable on the used market. Can be a bit limiting on a crop sensor camera, 28mm on a 1.6 crop camera is equivalent to 44.8, just add a 17-35 2.8 or a 16-35 2.8 to claim back an equivalent focal length of 27mm.

Simply the finest normal zoom I have ever seen. Takes amazingly sharp images with wonderful color and contrast. I have noticed it tends to flare (a little) with artificial lights while taking night shots, but it can normally be removed with very little effort. Check out some samles:
