Monreale, Sicily

Saint Rosalie
Patron Saint of Healing

I took this photo while traveling through Europe when I was 23.
I was using a meterless Yashica 35mm SLR and shooting nothing
but black and white film (I didn't believe in color!)
For some reason this was the only image I took at this site,
located in a cave on a mountain

The story went that there was a shipwreck, hundreds of years ago
and the only thing salvaged was the ship's anchor (look closely).

The appendages (arms, legs, bellies, heads, etc) and candles are offerings/prayers
brought by believers to help cure sick and ill friends or family.

NOTE: this is a digital photo of a print
(when I get a proper scanner I hope to post the original)

other sizes: small medium original auto

Talk about incongruity. Kinda creepy to me. But a very nice BW image. GMV
