I have the sigma for Nikon D100, and I wouldn't say it's soft. It's actually a pretty decent lens. Canon L series adn Nikon ED are not cheap. After spending almost $4000 on the 1D I would think you would looking for a deal on your glass...
With that said...the photos are nice...the pear and apple are very sharp.
Yes, the Sigma is the not the sharpest, but it does the job okay for wide angle. I see
you were able to get a good shot of the snow leopard. My kids wouldn't let me wait any
longer to see if they would get up and come back around the front. ;-) We both were
able to get the peacocks strutting their stuff too.
I knew somebody would get the "War of the Worlds" image. ;-)
Let me know when you're back from Australia.

Chris, Thanks for Posting!
BTW, I love some of your images from the NY trek, especially the "War of the Worlds" one...
PS, I use the Sigma 15-30mm, and it too seems just a bit soft, but its a good value for the money...
I have the D30 and find the Sigma 17-35 quite soft in comparison with
Canon lenses. It's probably on a par with the cheap ones but even my
trusty little 28-80 Canon outperforms it - ah well, maybe I'll get the
Canon 16-35L - One day....
