While in Tokyo in May 2006 I took a day trip down to the small coastal city of Kamakura. There are some great temples, shrines, and the Great Buddha statue here. Kamakura was once the capital of Japan, for a brief period. The city of over 100,000 is easy to get around on foot, and many of the shrines and temples are within walking distance of each other. There is a small local rail line here which is not much more that a tram. It slowly snakes its way through backyards of houses. I visited Kamakura in the morning and stopped by Yokohama in the afternoon. This makes for a good, full day trip outside of Tokyo. The rapid line to Kamakura takes around an hour or so and cost about US $18 round trip. While in Kamakura I visited the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine, Hase Kannon Temple, and the Giant Buddha statue.
