imogen cunningham specialised in portraiture, she took photographs called 'the ninety, to show how the elderly live, she used soft focuses and black and white. hardly any facial expression was used, e.g. smiling. sha was interested in nature and usually took photos in natural/existing light. used pictorialsm. she enjoyed using the effect of shadow and used body parts as subject matter, e.g. close up of hands or feet. used double exposure. she changed the scale of her photos and cropped them, also used plant forms. =)

I'm doing a project for my highschool black & white photo class on Imogen Cunningham, and I've done a lot of research on her art. It's not about the nude imagery; one must look at the bigger meaning, art isn't that blunt. She uses her photography as a means to express the human body as a natural, and to correlate with nature itself. There's nothing sexual about these photos; it's all about natural beauty, nature and being as one. I had to recreate her work on a roll of film; I didn't use nude models obviously, but we used flexible positioning and nature to mirror her art. It's actually beautiful.

i think her work is intresting, i dont think its at all weird that the art is esentailly nude based, im young and i realise that its what makes her work so good as each piece is individual and promts self thought.
i think its really amzing that she had the confidence to produce her work like this and i reckon each piece is emotive for different reasons and inspire you to think in a different way from the last.

Thank ypu for the possibility to enjoy Imogen work in such a good selection, quantitity and quality of work. Her fingers touch the most sensisitive part of nature: human body, movement of the human body and plants and flowers. She had such an exquisite soul and a magic eye. As an amateur fotographer I love working with human body in movement. I Found dance the most attracive for that. I read of a comment of someone in this site (MM?) who lis a dancer, likes fotography and lones imogen work. I would like to konow more of yuor ideas. I am glad to see a website that has such a large selection of Cunningham prints. But as a photographer i would be interested in seeing some information on each page about the print itself. For example what is the dimension, process, location exc... I hate to guess
