Eyed Click Beetle

Ward Pound Ridge, Westchester County, NY

Family Elateridae (Click Beetles)
Genus Alaus
Species oculatus (Eyed Click Beetle)

At nearly two inches long, this is one of the largest Click Beetles. The huge black eyespots are 'false eyes', likely an adaptation to ward off predators.
Click Beetles get their name from the sharp clicking sound overturned beetles make when they flip themselves into the air.
