Rabun Bald/Whiteside Mountain: May 15, 2002

John Brown and Bob Stelloh looked for R. vaseyi on Rabun Bald and on Whiteside Mountain. On the way, they found R. vaseyi, mostly past bloom, along both sides of SR107 just south of the Wade Hampton golf course, south of Cashiers, NC .John Brown had seen them a week earlier in full bloom.

At Rabun Bald, they found some deciduous azaleas with leaves similar to R. vaseyi, but with no confirming flowers, buds or seed pods. They were found on the way up, just left of the intersection of the Bartram Trail with a logging road, where R. vaseyi had been reported by Dr. Clarence Towe.

They found R. vaseyi with a few blooms left at 4900' elevation on Whiteside Mountain, about 150' east of the first observation area, about 3/4 mile from the parking lot. The area had a large population of Trillium catesbaei with colors ranging from nearly white to deep pink, including one with a pink stripe down each of the sepals.
