John Brown and Bob Stelloh revisited Pilot Mountain and the Blue Ridge Parkway, and also looked for R. vaseyi in the area of the original sighting by Dr. George Vasey in 1878, "seven miles southwest of Webster NC". The general route from Brevard NC was

• 276 to a left onto 475 at the Fish Hatchery
• 475 to a right onto 229 to a deadend
• moderate hike on the Art Loeb Trail up Pilot Mountain and back
• back on 229 to a right onto 475/Shoal Creek Road
• right onto 215 to the Blue Ridge Parkway
• left onto the Blue Ridge Parkway to 23/74
• left on 23/74 to 23/441 at Dillsboro
• left on 23/441 for 8.5 miles to a spot "7 miles SW of Webster"
• repeated and fruitless attempts to get up to the top of several knobs in the area, the most promising of which was a left onto Pumpkintown Road, which eventually turns into a Forest Service road ending at a locked gate
• right on 28 at Franklin, to Bryson City
• return via 441 to 23/74 to 276

We saw an outstanding R. vaseyi display on Pilot Mountain, a single outlying R. vaseyi on the Blue Ridge Parkway at a little over 6000' elevation, and a stand of Indian Paintbrush along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
