Members of the Vaseyi Chapter of the Azalea Society of America went to Andrews Bald on June 25, 2002. Andrews Bald is in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, two miles south of Clingmans Dome, one of the highest points in the eastern United States at 6643 feet.
The path to Andrews Bald descends from the Clingmans Dome parking lot. While the path is very rocky, it is an otherwise easy hike. Andrews Bald has many Abies fraseri (Fraser Fir) and Rhododendron calendulaceum (Flame azalea), along with a few R. maximum and R. catawbiense. We saw mostly orange flames, with no reds and only a few yellows. The bald is very scenic, with the flame azaleas set off beautifully by the firs, mountains and clouds.
