In the fall of 2009 removed the tree from the middle of the back garden. Then in the summer of 2010 we installed the new arbor. Now it was time to rework the garden. The plant had been placed where we could dig past the roots of the tree. With the tree gone it was a blank slate.
We had our good friend and garden guru, Lynette, over to plan the yard. We looked at books and drew up a plot map. Now this space is only 10 X 11 feet, but it is the center of our back patio. We came up with a plan and Katie and I went to work.
We removed all the current plants and bulbs. We turned all the dirt over by hand then went at it with a rototiller. We added two bags (2 cubic feet) of manure and five bags (15 cubic feet) of clay breaking mulch. Then we tilled it some more and more and more.
The roof of the house (living, dinning and kitchen) drains across the patio and into this area. With just a little rain it floods so we added a French drain under the dry river bed. We then put the old plants and bulbs into their new places and added some new plants.
I hope you enjoy the picture of the new garden as much as we are.
