Four able bodies met in Los Gatos on Sunday morning, disregarded the temperature, and drove to Sanborn Park to start our Sanborn hike.
It was 42 degrees when we arrived at the park (1200 ft) and pretty deserted. We circled until we found the trail we wanted and started up.
It was up up up to Skyline Blvd (3000ft) and then the trail flattened out somewhat to Indian Rock which is across Skyline from the entrance to Castle Rock SP.
There were several young guys there climbing the really bizarre rock formations even tho it was 45 degrees with a brisk wind and their hands were bare. We found a sunny place and sat down to eat our lunches. It wasn't long before my fingers started aching from the cold and we all decided to high
tail it back down to more comfortable elevations.
On this trip, we had lots of essential equipment for unplanned contingencies, unlike the ill fated trip at Mittledorf Preserve. The forest was beautiful with large rock caves dotting the side of the trail, a passel of deer feeding on the grassy lawn in Sanborn, a banana slug or two and two very unusual fungi that Bryan Murahashi photographed.
We hiked about 10 miles and got home about 3pm. We discussed making plans to hike as many sections of the Bay Area Trail as we can, so stay tuned for more hikes in the future.
