There were quite a few others around Chanute. I'm too young to remember a lot of them but I remember my Dad pointing out where many of them used to be when he was growing up in the 40's. One I remember actually still in business in the early 70's was located on E 17th between S. Highland and S. Edith. It was on the south side of 17th and I remember buying an RC Cola there one hot summer day. If I remember right the screen door had one of those old Rainbow Bread signs on it. Anyway, hope thought someone might appreciate the walk down memory lane. ;-)

I worked at B&H Grocery, the building you've posted. Bill and Helen Althaber owned it at the time. Bill was Mayor for awhile. Danny (George) Butler worked there as the butcher. I delivered groceries on Saturday in a little Rambler American station wagon. I cleaned several 40# boxes of mountain oysters one time for the Legion Hall before I even knew what they were. I kept asking Danny and he wouldn't tell me. He thought it was pretty funny. I made 56 cents an hour. Bill and Helen were easy to work for. Good people.

My dad went to Cross in the teens. I started kindergarten in 1952 at Hutton, the first year it was open. I have vague memories of the Cross building before it was torn down. Those old buildings were not in vogue then as they are today as unique fixer uppers for residences.

Butch was in my class at Cross and Hutton through the 6th grade. (You remember that the younger kids were in one class and the older kids were in another class, from kindergarten through the 6th grade.) My brother's class of 62 had a long and fun discussion on its listserv about memories and all of the junk food we bought in the M&P grocery stores adjacent to various schools. It would be fun to start a blog of all of our memories about these stores. I could set up a blog if you think it would be fun.

I was off in my math. I think Butch Palen was in the class of 61, he was about one year ahead of MEE and I was in the class of 62.

I helped deliver water to many of those stores. I well remember Palen's. Butch, the owner's son, was a class ahead of mine (mine being '61). There was a great demand for bottled water after the flood of '51 and it persisted for several years. No amount of reassurance from the city could supplant the image of foam coming out of our faucets from the water works, which was over run from the flood. The childhood memories become more precious with the passing of time. Thanks for the prompt.
