It never occurred to me that they were "whipping" the horses. The whips or sticks are used to give the horse directions. They are hit or even just tapped hard enough to convey the jockey's instructions. Some may need to be hit harder than others but they aren't being "whipped."

I can't get over the mud! As much as people love this, did you think the whipping of the horses was cruel?? I have problems with that.
