February 27, 2004

Lunch time. Not warm but sunny today. Like most students, she's on the phone!

I turned the saturation way down but not completely out and then turned down the blue channel hue, since there was still too much blue in the sky. Just experimenting rather than taking PS Elements's idea of B&W.

Nikon Coolpix 3100
1/533s f/4.9 at 17.4mm iso100 full exif

other sizes: small medium original auto

Love the composition and the texture in the stone.

I don't know. I kinda like her on the left looking away. adds to my thinking that she is sad and alone and maybe doesn't belong. But what do I know. :)

The girl is on the left edge of the picture looking out of the picture. It would have looked much better if she were on the right facing across the frame. Plus it would have moved more "weight" there, especially with her dark clothes to balance against the two columns on the left.

Mark, so I'm curious what's the major compositional flaw on this photo?

Mark, you are right that this shot needed the girl in it to be so effective. Excellent contrast in sizes! Nicely done.

Great story! Thanks for letting me enjoy it (her hand, her hand!)

Marvelous photo, Mark, with an almost monochromatic quality to it. Love the solitary figure.

Mark this is such a fantastic photograph. Well done.

This is great Mark.
Lovely light on the stonework and it is lunchtime.
We complain about the weather in February but when the sun is out it is beautiful.
The "golden hour" in the summer is stretched to all day this time of year.

wow you did great on this one, I love the 'very' soft almost black&white tones.

Wow! This is popular. Thank you, all. I'll be visiting the gallery of a few new names I see here soon.

I've been wanting to shoot this building for a while, but this was my first chance with good light and a person in the picture. Who will be the first to point out the major compositional flaw? Maybe I can shoot another like photo tomorrow and show you what's wrong.

I must report that she was not at all alone, yammering on her cell!--plugged into her ear. I think her hand is being used in a blocking action. :) After this shot she got up and moved to a bench facing the building. The other shots were nice, but boring without a person in them. I've got to get a model. :) Karen, when are you visiting with the triplets!? ;)

great shot...nicely seen!

Really nice image Mark ... you caught a special human moment here .. as well as the size and weight of the building ... neat.

Love this real life one. :)

I keep coming back to this picture. you can see the midday light in the black and white. I also like the contrast between the huge columns and the girl. I also didn't realize at first that she had a phone in her hand, I thought she was contemplating something which made her look sad, small and alone.

Great B&W Mark. I love this photo.
Guest 28-Feb-2004 02:50
Like Ann said, the columns are massive, the girl so small. Gives me thought.

everything they said . . . only in an old woman's voice . .LOL!
Guest 28-Feb-2004 02:25
VERY nice! I thought she had her hand to her head as if she were deep in thought! Remember back in the old days when we didn't have cell phones??? (read that in an old man's voice!!)
Guest 28-Feb-2004 02:03
Excellent Mark! The difference in scale between building and girl is quite dramatic. I really like this!
Guest 28-Feb-2004 01:40
I love this one for the columns and use of space!!!! Wonderful!
