Although I was using my 70-300mm DO lens, I don't remember being super close for this particular shot. But according to the Exif, I guess that I must have been pretty close.
After coming out of the woods, the Bear started to fish by sticking his head into the stream. That is why he is wet and has such an intense expression. He quickly caught a salmon and immediately went back into the woods with it.

The way the light falls on the bear makes it appear more like a painting. I'm guessing by it's stance that it's shaking the water off.
This is terrific! but you were only at 230mm??? Way too close for comfort.
