Dishomed 2013

Baby Wren

To my shock, while watering my house plants inside our Solar Room, I knocked three baby wrens out of their nest in one of my potted geraniums.

For the past few weeks, my husband has been commenting about a bird coming in & out the door with our dogs. Although I saw this myself a few times, I could find no bird poop in the Solar room. So I assumed the bird coming in & out of the house was a few brief and isolated incidents. Until Saturday... That's when I poured too much water into one geraniums and had 3 baby birds come tumbling out.

Each baby had tuffs of down still on his head but had an ability to fly short distances. So it seemed as if they are close to fledging; yet probably also still dependent on their parents. I didn't know what to do. I tried putting each of the 3 babies back into the potted plant with hopes it would be able to get back into the nest. But none would stay. They would fly back down to the ground. Meanwhile, Mama (or Papa) kept coming in and out the screen door to angrily scold me: http://www.pbase.com/britestar/image/151763980 . She was in almost as much of a panic as I was. Neither of us could round up all 3 babies birds to get them back together in one place.

I finally decided to leave the bird family alone and let Nature find a solution to my accidently dishoming the baby birds. To make it easier for the parent birds to feed the infants, I now have my screen door open between the solar room and outside for the Mama bird to come & go. Plus I have done some reading about wrens and their nesting habits. Even with the babies out of the nest and my knowing which plant the babies had been living in, it took me a half dozen times of careful inspection before I actually could find the well hidden nest at the base of the geranium down inside the pot.

Sunday, I saw Mama Bird and all 3 baby birds again. The babies came out of hiding when she came into the house & disappeared again when she went out. Today, Mama Bird is still coming in & out of the solar room. However, I haven't seen any of the babies in 2 days. Until they fell out of the nest, they had been totally quiet and invisible. So much so that I didn't know there was a nest filled with baby birds. So the babies may again be in hiding somewhere.
I REALLY hope they're okay. Although I don't want birds living in my house, these wrens have been totally non destructive. As I said, I haven't even seen a hint of bird poop anywhere. That rather puzzles me.
Anyhow, since Mama Wren was able to raise her brood of 3 to this stage, I hope they survive the few extra days to be able to fledge. I feel really guilty about accidently dishoming them.

The baby in the photo was merely 1 1/2 inches from tip of beak to end of tail. They're tiny, little things. Mama is quite small, too.
