Defending Her Turf

I watched this lone, female Fur Seal charge every human trying to go past her. She was stationed at the the only place there was not a tightly packed, massive group of other Seals (which would have made passing far more risky). Therefore, most all the "red coats" opted to go pass her. It was hard to tell if the Fur Seal was all bluff (possibly), or if she would have actually bitten anyone. Nevertheless, various humans automatically waved their hiking poles at her (with some actually making physical contact) to prove that they were not to be messed with. Rather than being frightened off, this Antarctica Fur Seal then would turn her attention to the next approaching humans & go after them. With her mouth open and showing teeth, she often came within mere inches of several people. It was an interesting scene in behavior - by both the Fur Seal and by the humans.

Terrific image Liz! Thank you so much for the detailed description. I feel sorry for this poor seal who is only trying to protect her territory from man. V
