When hearing about the F18 crash in Virginia Beach my first thoughts when to deaths on the ground and the backlash that will arise from it. Luckily, as of this writing, there have not been any reported deaths on the ground or of the two aviators. The bad news is that this is going to refuel the desire to push the jets of Naval Air Station Oceana out of Hampton Roads. It is the whole “Not In My Backyard” belief.

While traveling to visit the In-Laws in North Carolina recently we decided to travel via back roads to get to I85 instead of taking the dreaded 58 through Emporia and such. One of the areas that we drove through was an area being considered for an Outlying Field (OLF) as there were signs everywhere stating “No OLF!” An airfield like that is one that would be used to practice take offs and landings. It is nice to have those out in God’s country because of the amount of noise generated during those phases of flight in reference to the ground but the farmers and such don’t want them because of the noise. I almost understand their desire not to want it because they were there first. The most of the city folk on the other hand were not there before NAS Oceana.

If you don’t like the sound of freedom then move. Or you can keep complaining about it so the Navy moves away. Then what? Don't worry because you'll cry about that too when the money that the sailors pump into the local economy is gone with the jets.

*** The comment about my photo looking horrible yesterday had to do with the way it appears on my computer. It is extremely pixalated but the wife assures me that it doesn't really look like that.
