Ball Diamond Ball

One major difference from being underway on a carrier versus a destroyer is the ride. While conducting Quarters one morning in the hangar bay, a destroyer began their approach for a refueling at sea. My view through Deckhouse 3 made me miss the ride of a destroyer. The seas weren’t particularly rough this morning but as the destroyer pulled along side I would watch the 5” gun disappear below my view as the ship dipped then the black paint below the waterline appear as the bow came up out of the water. While all of this is going on what do I feel? Nothing. I can’t even tell we’re underway.

There was one evening that we encountered some rough weather. Winds broke the 100 knot mark for over 30 minutes. That night I slept like a baby. It felt like a typical night on a destroyer.
