Population 1,090,000 - we stayed in a lovely Riad (14th century house built around two inner courtyards) in the Medina (the old town) http://www.tamkast.co.ma where we had a bedroom, our private atrium and a huge shower room all to ourselves as well as the use of the roof terrace (great for breakfast) and a downstairs communal room for evenings or rain. The Riad was very peaceful and quiet at night and in the day, probably because it sat in the heart of a warren of houses and closes so that none of the motorbike noises and general hubub from the street could enter.
The street was very busy at all times except lunchtime. We toured the main attractions according to the Lonely Planet: Medersa Ali Ben Yussuf, the Jardin de Majorelle, the Musee de Marrakesh, the Saadian tombs and one decadent afternoon at the garden/swimming pool of "Oasiria" where we got terribly sunburnt but had a great last day of our holiday.
Best bits: mint tea, storks, sitting on our Riad roof for breakfast, call of the muezzin, great food even for us vegetarians, fantastic fresh bread.
Not so good bits: Moped abd bike traffic in the narrow streets, donkeys and horses in appalling, conditions, people trying to be our "guides" when we knew exactly where we were going.
