Rain was forecast for the afternoon the day we'd planned to hike Baldface Mountain in eastern Maine, but since it was Matt's day off we decided to go anyhow. The rain arrived early. At the shelter we debated turning around but encouraged by the enthusiasm of a group of teenage girls from Camp Newofund , we decided to follow them up the ledges. The smooth granite was wet and slippery but we all managed to make it up to the ridge, where the rain let up briefly and the boys constructed a couple cairns. Tall skinny ones. Cailin's camera declined to work in the rain so I took group photos. We found three kinds of ripe blueberries and ate a few but the rain and wind were resuming so we didn't linger to pick any. We descended via Slippery Brook to avoid the hazards of wet ledges . At Emerald pool some of the girls stopped for another group photo. Only Cailin went swimming. She led out in the puddle-stomping too. Thunder heralded our return to the trail head; we got off the mountain just in time. It was an adventure.
