Light Rain and Falls, Upper Zion Canyon

Light rain continued through this day without any hint of blue sky. I always loved the elevated area at the far end of Zion Canyon for interesting foliage – with the grass, cactus, and interesting trees and shrubs which are abundant this area. In this case I was specifically looking for a long shot looking back down Zion Canyon, with the rain and clouds lending perspective and added depth to the shot against the huge cliffs…but a good composition was lacking. I looked toward one of my favorite waterfalls on the other side of the canyon from my position and composed this image. Getting this photo was not that easy…it was now raining moderately and I had to shelter my lens from the rain (I forgot my umbrella in the car!), and I was working between two very prickly cacti which kept on poking me as I crouched for this shot. Unfortunately, several images were ruined in my attempt to keep water off the lens, as my hand partially obstructs the field of view! I won’t be forgetting my umbrella next time.
