This great looking dead tree was found near Desert View, on the south Rim of the Grand Canyon. Convective snow showers were moving through all afternoon, bringing alternately heavy snow and clearing as they passed into the canyon. This made for great skies all afternoon, and the opportunity to shoot rainbows over the canyon anytime the sun was in an optimal location. I wanted something a bit different from the standard ‘Rim’ shot from the canyon, and decided to get very close to this dead tree with my 17-40L lens. Is this a pretty shot of a dead tree, or an obstructed view of the Grand Canyon? It’s a bit of both – perhaps that’s why I like it. Because of the focal length used (27mm), I had to stop down quite a bit to hold focus with both the tree and distant canyon. Canon 10D, 17-40L, 1/60 sec at F/19
