Winter Sunrise

It was snowing lightly when I went to bed the night before, and when I looked out my hotel window at 4:00 AM it was still cloudy, so I was not in a hurry to shoot the sunrise as it was ‘going’ to be cloudy. When I peered out the window again at 5:00 AM – the clouds had broke and I could see sunrise colors starting to appear in the eastern sky! I threw my equipment in the car, rushed out of the hotel room, and zoomed up to Bryce Canyon (Sunset Point) and made it within 5 minutes of sunrise…this was my first picture of the morning. The icy stillness of the moment, combined with the 2-3 feet of fresh snow made for a surrealistic scene – I had been to Bryce many times in the past, but have never seen it so immersed in Winter. So different. This was to be the start of a wonderful day indeed.

Superb image of a breathtakingly beautiful place. It's been several years since my last visit - I always visit during the winter - your images bring back many fond memories, GMV!

I can feel the chilly morning of Bryce Canyon with its' ice creamy red cliffs, suntanned by the early sun of March, and just want to take a deep breath and absorb it inside me. Such a great adventure. They say that the first shot is always the best. I agree.
