Wave2-7.jpg

Coyote Buttes

This image is more of a study of color and shape, and is actually only a fraction of the original image - much of it being cropped away preferring this tighter, more abstract interpretation. This was one of the first images I took on this day - on a cold, silent morning with the temperature hovering very close to freezing. I had just crossed the 'saddle', and was on the east side of the ridge that one follows the rest of the way to the Wave. The sun had just risen, and was blazing the east side of this ridge, where an amazing array of sandstone patterns await the curious. I was struck by how 'cold' the sandstone appeared at my feet, being saturated by the steel-blue sky above. I put this in contrast with the warm colors of the first morning light of the hills in the backround through the use of a puddle to create this image. In all of the images I took of this puddle you could see the blue sky above the buttes in the backround (actually, in the reflection they're below), but was not satisfied with that more literal composition. If you look closely, you can actually see a very tiny fragment of the sky along the bottom of the photograph - that's the only hint I left to lend some spatial reference. The image could, perhaps, be better if cropped more from the bottom, but I like where it is at this time. Only minor contrast/saturation enhancement in Photoshop.
