Transi tomb

Musée du Louvre, Paris (1er), France

This sixteenth-century tomb is a good example of the so-called "transi tomb." On the top it has an effigy of the defunct as she was in life, reading a book with her dog. (French people already had little yap-yaps 400 years ago!) On the bottom you see the naked corpse in a state of decay. Memento mori or hope of the resurrection?
