The Martyr of the Mont

Paris (18e), France

Montmartre gets its name from the Latin for the "Hill of the Martyr." The martyr in question was Saint Denis, the evangelist of the Parisians, who got his head chopped off for his pains. He is said to have picked it up and carried it to St.-Denis, where the kings of France are buried.
