Lion Rock, Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

A most amazing rock in the middle of Sri Lanka, the home of a king's court in the 5th Century. It still has most of the surrounding grounds intact, with modern day style aquatic systems which allow fountains and flowing lakes, and a number of frescoes of beautiful women again dating from the same time.

Well worth a visit.

I have been there only once. And these pictures remind me how great that place was. I'm proud to be Sri Lankan!

I've been there thrice already. In the coming November, I'll be climbing it again with a group of 45 people from Thailand. It's really a marvelous place. Just imagine how it'd have looked like when it was newly built centuries ago. For me, to visit the ruins in ancient cities of Sri Lanka, one really experiences religious sentiment. I love Sri Lanka.

Sigiriya is one of the most amazing places in the world. I would recommend it as the first place any visitor to Sri Lanka should visit! Paintings are as fresh as they were painted just a few days ago, despite they are about 15 Centuaries old! Don't forget to go through the Lion's mouth and reach the top. I have seen that some tourists turn back at the Lion's paws, not having courage to climb pass it! The view from the top is aweful. But most importantly, observe the architecture (of the remaining palace ruins) and irrigation technology they had used! If you go on a rainy day, you will see that 1500 Yrs old fountains are still functioning with rain water from the top!

Me and my wife were married in Sri Lanka in 2001. I went up Lion Rock a couple of days before the wedding. When she first saw photos of Lion Rock she didn't think I would be coming back. When I was there a lot of local school children were at the top , all making the climb with a lot less effort than I did !
