Government sponsored orphanage for injured or abandoned elephants. There appears to be around 60 elephants here in various states, from the youngest at around one month old- lost by its mother after a wild animal attacked it,to one very much in its dotage and almost totally blind.
It is a great tourist attraction, but also carries out a very worthwhile function, as most of its habitants would not survive otherwise.
present day society elephants have great importance.because they cant see every where. pinnawela orphanage do a huge role for protect them.

Visited the "orphanage" recently and was very disappointed with the state of the elephants, so much so that we left before babies feeding time. Think it has become a money making scam at the expense of the elephants.

I was fortunate to visit the orphanage in 2004, enjoying every single minute even though it was joy marred with sadness
