I was trying to think of the cabin I was in when i was a camper in 1966 I think it was St Jane's there was St Jane St Joan and the big cabin was St Elizabeth I remember mosquitos freezing cold water we had no hot water and those horrible bunks with the lumpy mattresses but we still had good times any alumni from St Jane's out there? Anyway I missed the Jan breakfast I cldt get a ride maybe the nxt one

I was not a camper at Cedar Crest, but I use to visit there back in the 60's to serve Mass in the Chapel with a Fr. Phil Kerrigan (A longtime family friend) who was the Celibrant along with his Nephew (a pal of mine). I remember how all the floors and pews racked and squeaked if anyone move a muscle in the place. It was pretty funny and we both benefitted by this chaos in that Fr. Phil could not hear and then jokingly criticize our responses in Latin which was sometimes suspect....well, perhaps all the time. Fr. Phil was an African Missionary Priest. A few years later it was said he died in a light plane crash in Liberia serving the Lord. I am honored to have his name and with his name I do my best to live up to the type a man Fr. Phil was.

I was scrolling down on the web site and could not believe all the names and the comments, and as we all have said one time or another "it is a small wold". i read one about a Rita and Janet D'ambrosio from the North End, well my mothers maiden name was D"Ambrosio my grandfather Louis was related to Lilian D'ambrosio she was from the North End and she was a judge in Boston. I also went to Julie Billiart High School for 2 years before I went to California I believe it was 1964 - 65 i don't remember the girls but what if we are related?? Greetings, Hope all of you past and present Camp Cedar Crest Alumni have a safe and happy Holiday Season. As Larry has stated below we have our monthly breakfast at Bickfords on Montvale Ave exit off Rte 93. Typically we meet at 10:30am and talk about camp until..... Last meeting in December we saw Vinny Bucca. He brought with him many recollections of his time at camp. Also the photos from Kathy Contardo, thanks Kathy. You must bring the rest with you at the next breakfast. We'll keep you posted. As far as Peter being a romeo he doesn't remember that at all, but we do. Funny thing about memories especially when your wife or husband or kids may be listening. I think they call it "Selective Memory Retention", only the good things. Hi Everyone....I've visited the Cedar Crest site a couple of years ago. Thought I would see what was up. I tried emailing Larry Doucette but no reply. hope you're ok Larry. Has anyone heard from Joyce Lawton? She was my first sweetheart at CCC. I would sneak over to the side of the beach where the girls were to sit with her. Eventually, I was brought back to the boy's side. I always tried to dance all the dances with her. All the Rabbitts are fine. So many fond memories! Where can I get postcards? We never had cameras back then, so many of my memories of the camp are pretty general. Some years ago, I went down to CCC and the buildings were being torn down. Very sad for me to see. The 'rec' hall was still standing at the time. Immediately thought of watching movies on movie night --- when the projector was working --- and of course the end of the year minstrel shows! Hi Everyone, It's been a while since I wrote. Someone wrote that I knew a band and got them to play in an apartment. I didn't even know a band. I think you are thinking of someone else. I was counselor at St. Ann's cabin around 1968-69ish. I had Lydia and Linda Murray, adorable little black girls. Lydia was a little rascal and Linda was beautiful. I use to let them wear my earrings. I was counselor with Mary Theresa. We had lots of fun preparing for the dances and all the "midget" girls wanted me to put makeup on them. Did go to the roller skating rink and skated to "I'm Henry the Eighth I Am", as a waitress. I remember Rene Jordan (think she worked at Filene's) years ago, Joyce Lawton, Barbara Lawton. After camp I was in touch with Pat Green, head counselor, Mary and Tex Cancellare. I also remember Kathy Fallon, she was my bunk mate with I was a senior camper. Many happy memories of camp. We would always cry when the season ended and hoped we would see everyone the next year.

How the hell are all of you? Your right Rich I did see Hughie Morgan a lot living in Scituate, he dated a woman who I worked with. Sorry to hear about your Mom,I loved visiting the Infirmary, your Mom would always offer me these raisin scones. I fell in love with this area back in the day and always swore I would try to find a way to live in this area. I lived in Scituate and now Norwell for the last 20 years and my brother Mike lives in Hanover. I go by the Camp from time to time and see houses where the cabins were,it's to bad kids today can't experience what we did. '67,'68 and '69 were very good years for me. Well,the Marshfield Fair opened today and they're expecting good weather all week. It's not like it was back then but it's getting better turning back to more Ag related events. I'll be checking this site from time to time so know that when I remember all of you and the good times we had it puts a very big smile on my face. Take care Vinny Bucca

Hi Richard, Hi guys; I just spent a week down in Marshfield, my friend and his wife live there on the street right next to the beach Ocean St., not only that he plays in a band at of all places "The Road House" I went to the beach just about every day, a lot rockier, but hey it was the beach Remember???The beach, the ride, the food place at the end of the beach, the juke box and lets not forget the Beach Boys. Greetings to the Buccas'. I remember all as well. My mother Rose Michalski passed a few years back and was always talking about the Camp days. I went to Camp Cedar Crest 1965 to 1668, my mother was one of the camps nurse’s Betty Bucca and the other was Mrs. Michalski. Went to the Camp those years with my two brothers Vinnie and Peter. I had a crush on a girl from Roslindale, Marilyn Maguire. After all these year I didn’t run into anyone from the camp! Where have the years gone!!

m...... I was at CCC '58---67....... I recall a Helen Hughes who was the waitress counselor in 1965, but that Helen Hughes was probably in her 50's or 60's at the time...I was 17 so anyone older than 20 was "old" to me...I'm 64 now , so I have a different perspective.

Reading these communications brings back so many fond memories of my times at CCC like the ride to the beach on the red truck (with planks as seats) the dance in the recreation hall, and marching to the dining hall. I also remember going through at least a few cans of off mosquito spray which never worked, carrying a flashlight around at night with the orange neck, and I actually started smoking cigarettes for the first time in St. James cabin but haven’t smoked since. It was the summer of 68’ because I remember the movie Bullet staring Steve McQueen was in theatres. those were good times.

You should ask Dick Stetson; he must remember, since he had to drive all the way from Marshfield, then swing through Medford to pick up Bobby, and then surely had trouble finding a parking spot in Brookline.I lived in a strange apartment, behind the main house; the first floor had only a kitchen.Maybe you remember the food; my mother served a roast beef.Hahaha.Do you remember my friend Patty Maguire ? She was there. I remember one time Patty and I went to Brant Rock and Dick took us for a ride in his motor boat.Those were the days,we had a lot of fun.I am on facebook with my married name,Griffing.My profile pic is of me getting out of a kayak; I still love the beach.

The party was in Brookline, in September. Several people showed up; it was more of a reunion. Franny Burke offered to invite some of her friends who had a band. They showed up with their equipment, amps, etc.; and within 5 minutes of playing, the landlady was banging on the door and threatening to call the police. Typical Camp Cedar Crest memory; funny now ! Yes, I am on facebook, and like one of the other posters ,I live on a street named Cedar Crest; in Ladue Missouri.So I can't forget about that camp, and I also remember the oatmeal,it had a smoky aroma ,very unusual.

about the black kids; there was one girl I was friends with-Concetta Williams. She was from Roxbury and we had great fun all summer( and had fun getting in trouble with Mrs. Rabbitt ).She kept the cabin in stitches with her jokes. Wonder how she is; it was prob the summer of '68. And Peter doesn't remember me ? I was at least as cute as you were handsome! Well, in those days, if two people liked each other,they didn't talk much, but would have a friend convey information back and forth. I am thinking it was Frannie Burke, or Paula ( who I think swiped you after I left,but I digress). I got a message that you "liked" me, which in Cedar Crest language meant you wanted to sit with me on the truck to the skating rink. On the way back you kissed me...no big deal for you but a first for me. I had long blonde hair and was average height and thin. You then attended a birthday party at my house and Dick was there ( maybe he can refresh your memory ) .He was there with Bobby Tassinari. The waitresses were in awe of the fact that Bobby found a townie ( and he had a boat!) for a boyfriend. They were a very cute couple.Hmmph; I'm not used to not being remembered ! Vinnie Bucca remembered me and looked me up 5 years later.

I had a friend who was smitten with Vinnie;so he was off limits! I did see him a few times years later. It is interesting that when I started at the camp, we lived in Dorchester. We later moved to Brookline, to 175 High Street,which was across from the building you lived in. I went to Camp Cedar Crest in the early 1960's. I lived in Falls Church, VA, and my Parents shipped me up to Revere, MA, where my Grandmother and Aunt would drive me to Marshfield. I was an Alter Boy there, met a very nice girl named Kathy Fallon but lost touch with her. Loved being bussed to the beach and marching to chow. I remember the Boys were on one side of the main road and the Girls were on the other. Loved the skits we would put on and the dances. I have a picture of me standing in front of the Mattaponi bungelow I stayed in.

I was there around 1964-68. I was a waitress the last year. I was famous for getting kicked out; which I regret because I missed the Minstrel Show. I went to visit a relative with 2 of my friends, who shall remain unnamed, and we didn't bother to sign out. We got in trouble with a certain Mrs.Rabbit and our parents had to come and get us. But I couldn't stay away. I talked my mother into taking me and one of my partners in crime , for a little vacation to Brant Rock. As soon as the bus pulled into town, we ran up the road to the camp and everyone was so surprised to see us...especially Peter Iovanni who was caught red handed with a new girlfriend . Sigh.

Hello Greg, I too remember those cold showers very well but since they were communal I’d simply wait until the camp counselors finished taking their hot showers (which stood adjacent to ours) before beginning mine. I doubt today if campers, Counselors, and CIT’s take their showers together? I also remember the boxing matches.

I went to CCC in the early 60's. First year we stayed 2 weeks and then the other 3 summers we stayed the whole summer. I remember a lot of the camp....the freezing cold showers (except the night of the last dance, the canteen, boxing my brother, the Minstrel Show, the truck to the beach, the seminarians, and the peanut butter and bread at every meal. Oh ya, also the BB guns. Can you believe we went to mass every morning, prayed the Angelus and said the Rosary? I remember one of my best friends Tommy Santos and our counselor Hank Keenan who left the seminary that summer. For punishment if we talked after dark we had to stand outside in our underwear and get bit my mosquitoes in the dark or wrap our hands around a broomstick, kneel on it and recite the rosary. I remember sneeking up to the girl's camp and also over to the farmer's field nextdoor and stealing corn. Remember the field days against the girls? It was so much fun. I remember on Fridays we had delicious fried fish and stewed tomatos for lunch and always had corn chowder for dinner. Also some mornings we had to eat the grossist oatmeal and this ancien old lady would stand at the head of the table and yell at us to eat our oatmeal. My last summer the NAACP no longer allowed the counselors to wear blackface for the minstrel show so they had to wear clown makeup but still had the pillows to make big boobs and hips. I remember at the beach we had to stay on one side and the girls on the other. If you were lucky a counselor would take you down to the store for candy. We all had Irish skin and fried all summer. Now I have skin cancer. St Vincent, Saint Alowishious what were the others? We would be so happy if we got cabin of the day or week after inspection.

If I remember correctly his name kept coming up over the camp PA system "Rusty Burke to the administration office, Rusty Burke" this would have been during the early 1970s.

I went to Camp Cedar Crest, Green Harbor, MA in 68, 69, and 72 and have many fond childhood memories of those long summers which culminated in a huge bonfire at the end of each two week session. During the intervening years I went to Camps Andover and Waldron in Meredith, New Hampshire but it just wasn’t the same. I missed getting driven down to Duxbury beach each day on the back of an open truck, playing baseball, and capture the flag with the nearby camp.

I remember going to CCC in the late 60's. I remember watching the moon landing in the rec hall. I also remember couselors Bill Dunn & Bill Walsh. Campers I remember was one of the Rabbitts, the Levesque brothers, & John Cooney. I washed dishes one night and everyone else bailed on me and I had to do it all myself. Cooney & I ran away from camp, went to some gas station down the street to buy a pack of cigarettes. When we eventually went back, they took a bunch of cigarettes and emptied them on the ground and had us pick up the teeny pieces of tobacco, then when we rode that old truck to the beach, the couselors kept dunking us underwater till we thought we were gonna die. I was a pain in the ass kid from the Mission Hill projects whose other just wanted to keep me out of trouble. Didn't work :-) Who was the old nature dude in one of the back cabins, next to the hall where boxing would take place, and where I got a bloody nose. I still have letters I wrote my grandmother from camp.

me and my sister went to that camp in 1959 and i will never forget the ride to the beach on planks in the back of a rack truck....i guess it was ok back then and we also had the buddy system when we got there...and watch out for the horseshoe crabs...and saying the rosary every morning before breakfast in back of the barracks....and i was lucky my parents put money in the canteen for me...

hi. My name is Marilyn Hurley Wall. I was at Camp Cedar Crest in 1966 with a younger sister and neighborhood kids from Mission Hill, Boston, Ma. I remember that we had to go to the beach in a big red truck. The first week I was there it rained for a little while, but we still went to the beach. We then went back to the camp and had quiet time. We had to stay in our bunks and could read or write home. I remember one night and the doorknob to the counselors room came off and it got thrown and we had to go find it. My younger sister would cry every night and a friend of hers also. I wrote letters to my family every day saying come get us this place stinks. Come get us the food is awful. Come get us Elaine cries every night. My parents came that first Sunday to see what we had been doing. My sister went home and I stayed for the second week. I grew to love it. The food was probably okay, but I was a very fussy eater. I remember the sports and the movie nights or story nights. I remember the songs. For many year, I sang them to my younger sisters and now my children and nieces and nephews. I also would love to know the words to the song. I do not recall it. Reading all of your posts has been great. My mother saved my letters that I sent her. After being a CCC, my family and I moved from Mission Hill to Cedarcrest Circle, West Roxbury, MA I could not believe it. For many years, it has brought back memories about Camp Cedar Crest. Thanks for all the memories. I remember "Gee Ma I want to go, but they won't let me go, gee ma I want to go home. They say at Camp Cedar Crest". I don't recall the rest.

What a great site! I was a camper for three summers ca. 1961-63 -ish. My memories: the crazy truck ride to the beach every day while listing to e.g. Stevie Wonder's Fingertips on someone's transister radio, the daily canteen trip and birch beer, boxing in the ring- if you got into fights the councilors would pair you with someone just as bad, strap boxing gloves on you and let you duke it out in font of the whole camp, the ghost stories told at night by the councilors and the secret places in the woods they would show you- like where people got killed and stuff!!!, waiting for mail call for that letter from home, writing home begging to be taken out (the first week or so-my mother saved all those letter for me), arts and crafts when it rained- making model cars and necklaces of gimp, archery and BB-rifles, field day, the big bonfire, evening role call and camper-of-the-day announcements and sneaking out at night with our flashlights into the neighboring cornfield to clip and ear of corn as a trophy-the farmer was rumored to shoot at campers with buckshot! I am so glad I went.

Camp Cedar Crest was owned by Father Hartigan Pastor of the Immaculate Conception School in Everett, MA and i believe his sister was in charge at the camp! I was a waitress in the fifties for a short time!

Anyway, i remember when we we're all at the beach (Dated a guy years later who grew up on the road going to the beach) and we had a hail storm and the people who lived on the beach let us up on the porches, I was A camper, then a waitress, worked in the canteen, like I said I would love to be at camp now. I sang down town strutters ball in the minstral show and I remember as a camper I couldn't wait to be in the waltz. Hi; Thanks for this collection! I spent my summers with my aunt and uncle at Brant Rock. We lived in Cambridge and I was very young (5 yrs) and couldn't wait for school to be out for the summer to have my uncle drive us down Route 3 for the summer. I did it until I turned 16 every summer. So many great memories! I remember the old Coast guard station in Brant Rock (closed) where I would sit on an old chair try to imagine what it was like when it was open. I remember the movie house. Thanks again!

The "old lady" in the dining room was probably Mrs Helen Hughes. She was in charge of the waitresses and would patrol the dining hall making sure they did their job, and stayed clear of the boys in the dishroom and kitchen. Sounds like "larry" was a camper in '64--'65....I worked in the kitchen those years.... how was the hash? I passed along the legend of the Red Dot Man to my kids and grandkids.....still a good yarn.

I was there for the summers of 64-65. Does anyone remember the 'Red Dot Man'? THe older kids would use that to scare us. Years later, I found out it was a red light atop the water tank off of Rt 139. Boxing was awesome and so was making those things make out of gimp! THe canteen, the girls peeking at the boys taking showers, the dances. Who was the old lady that would walk through the dining hall? The smell of suryp, the bug juice. Great times,

To Tom Dunn - Jimmy Sullivan (actually O'Sullivan) is my brother and yes I am one of his sisters that went to camp with Peggy Marshalsea. My most favorite days as a teenager were at Camp Cedar Crest - I went there for 8 weeks as a waitress and when the dishboys went on strike - we did their job and got the pay for it. I believe I went in summer of 69 - remember Rosemary, Joan and Jean, Peggy Marshalsea, the Rabbits, and yes the dishboys and kitchen boys. My sisters and brothers also went to camp and I do have some pictures....will try to get some scanned in and sent. Wow - to be a kid again ....it was the best!! I loved the Minstrel show, field day, going to beach, our nights out and days off. I hated going home!! Dianne "O'Sullivan" Zawacki. I was not from Everett - I came from Roslindale/Dedham.

Tom Dunn, Hi I went to Cedar Crest the last 3 years it was open. My last year I was a dishboy. Had great fun. I remember my co workers were Jimmy Sullivan from Dedham and Vernon Marshalse from Needham. Both of them had sisters who were waitresses. It was great times and got paid $5.00 a week! Other friends were Andreas (from Columbia but lived in Milton), Tom Jarvis, Tree Costa, Leah (sp). I remeber a kitchen boy named Mullins (who always picked on me) and his sister was a waitress. I was in the waltz at the last minstril show and enjoyed all the sports and the beach. I remember counselor Tex and Bill Walsh (later a priest in JP).

I thought I would never find anyone that went there oe ever heared of it, Then one dayy sister who works at a resturant in Hanover MA and their was a regular customer thab would come in on Sat, she heard him talking about Camp Cedar Crest and told him that she had been there and also two other sister. She didn't remember much but when she tokd me I said what was his name. she said it was Hughie, I told her I did remember him I fell in love with him and at the time I lived in Belmont and he lived in Arlington. We were suppose to meet in Harvard square,he never showed up(were were about 12) I told her to tell him he broke my heart. I wanted to meet him again but he move to California. Agaim he stood me up.His wife said I could have him. HA HA HA What a small world. My name was Joan Boyle and now it is Smith I had red hair not (to many redheads back then)

Hi I'm Trying to find out about my great uncle zavan Smith who lived on the Island on Green Harbor. I was very young when he died but remembered him as a nice old man. Wanted to get some back ground on him. My brother seems to remember his role was to watch the shoe and fly the american flag every day. In return the us goverment gace him living right's and a small salary. The island was surounded by water at high tide, you could walk to it during low tide. But unless you were prepared to spend the night you had to leave before the tide changed. He thought it was Green Harbor Would love pictures, stories, or anything anyone might have, on my great, great, great uncle Zavan. I'm thinking 30's 40's early 50's I think he died in the 50's not sure can't find any records. Thanks

Like so many others I too just out of the blue looked on the internet under Camp Cedar Crest in Marshfield. My brothers and older sister attended from I believe '63-'70. I remember all the cabins were saint names catherine, ann theresa agnes. The morning inspection followed by a watermelon for cabin of the week and camper of the week. It was special to hear your name over the loud speaker. The sports all day we played archery, softball, volleyball - the dances. The truck ride to the ocean was truly memoriable. Also the Minstrial shows and movie night I still remember the Movie the jules verne classic with the huge animals on shore after the prisoners escape from jail. Also the big races in the middle of the field the relay races with a huge can with water in it, Our family went for a month in August Terry, Eddie, Johnny and Me Cindy Collins. I was friends with Cheryl Marshalsea, she had a sister Peggy that was my brother johnnys age a year older. We were from Brookline, I remember Ms. Bowmen playing the piano and practicing for the shows and reel dances. The nurse I thought was MRS. Bucci she had two sons peter and ??? quite handsome I remember at the time. Wow great memories. I was a happy camper as well, from 1964-1968-9?I stared out as a "Midget" and eventually ended up as dishwasher and kitchen helper.Ahh...many fond memories. I believe I worked in the kitchen with Richard Michalski, his brother and I believe a wonderful woman who was Rich's mom. Loved to march to meals to those J.P. Sousa chestnuts blaring over the loudspeaker system. I also learned how to fold the American flag,a duty that I still hold in my heart.

1959 At Cedar Crest was a long summer for my brother Paul and myself. We spent 2 months at camp and enjoyed most everything that took place. The canteen, boxing, bonfires, birchbeer, even the dances. I need to know one thing about cedar crest that has really been on my mind for over 50 years. The freekin pancakes were the best ever, Seriously. My camp buddy, and still best friend , Richard Michalski went there '55 or so to '68. You may recall his mother Rose Michalski...the Camp nurse. Just on a whim I thought I would look up Camp Cedar Crest on the internet. Holy Mary and Joesph this site came up. I really can't remember the years I went to Camp with my twin brother Billy and younger brother Joey (he was a "Midget" camper) but we went for the entire summers (all eight weeks!) and loved every minute of it! My first crush on a girl (Joyce) was during my second summer at the camp. I remember the daily truck rides to the beach and the daily visits to the canteeen. I remember shooting BB guns and archery. The dances every two weeks and the year end Minstrel Show. I had to box my twin brother in the ring...and he gave me one right to the chops and I was finished! I remember having to get up and clean our areas for morning inspection, and the councelors (Seminarians) writing our scores on their clipboards. Those years were and still are very special to me. I made some great summer friends and hope to hear from any of my fellow campers who might remember the Rabbitt kids. (Mike, Billy and Joey) Sometimes I watch that camp movie ..."The Parent Trap" and think how similar some of the scenes were like Cedar Crest. The furniture on the roof was a bit over the top...but I enjoyed the movie and ofcourse the original with Halley Mills. Best to all my fellow campers and priests. I imagine Fr. Hartigan has passed on, but I will always remember washing his black Lincoln Continental on Sunday nights. Later...Mike Rabbitt

PaulBreen.....I remember you. We were probably cabin mates in St Josephs, or St James, or maybe Don Bosco. Paul Lavin was my all-time favorite councellor , not only an excellent baseball coach but also passed out the Wiffle Stick and Canoe before the dances. I attended Camp from '58 to '65. Working there the last three years. Richard Michalski and I organized last years reunion....we had quite a turnout. Frank Ialenti came as did Al Donaldson who flew in from L.A. We're still in touch with a number of alumni......Hughie Morgan, Paul Palermo to name two. I also had crush on Judy Thompson . She now lives in northern California. Shortly after the reunion Richard and I met with Judy (who was here on vacation) , Neil, and Mrs Thompson. Oh yeah, my name was,and is, Larry Doucette I grew up in Belmont but went the full eight weeks every summer. Over the last couple of years Richard and I have contacted about forty people who have connections to the Camp . It is amazing sometimes the things that pop up on the web. I was sitting at home recently and decided clear out of the blue to see if anything would be there for Camp Cedar Crest. Imagine my great surprise when this site showed up! I am so sorry I discovered it too late to attend the reunion. I would have come in a flash. The flood of memories was overwhelming and I don’t want to bore anyone but here goes. I was there for 8 weeks each summer from’59 to ’62 so have a very good recollection of life there. Not quite sure when that aerial view was taken but it is pretty cool to see the whole site from above. The main row of cabins (and let’s remember most were named after saints like St Aloysius, St James etc.). The bathrooms in those trees behind that row (that always had plumbing issues). Francis Ialenti, I was in that cabin also and spent many hours with Arthur Flaherty, Neal Thompson (had a huge crush on Neal’s sister Judy), and Robert Mirabella. I was also that stubborn little kid who would not eat his corn chowder no matter what! Random thoughts: Endless hours playing baseball and football. Paul Lavin (Counselor) throwing those 50-60 yard bombs we could never catch. I‘ll never forget the family of skunks taking up residence underneath Don Bosco Hall (it had that raised floor) and that unforgettable aroma that would rise up on hot summer evenings. The truck rides to Green Harbor and occasionally Duxbury beach (where we could almost finish 99 bottles!) Being really careful to not step on horseshoe crabs on the bayside at Duxbury. Sneaking out to buy cigarettes from the machine outside that little restaurant down the street (the Pantry Shelf?). The minstrel show and that ridiculously corny German submarine routine we performed every year. Capture the flag games at the pit about a half mile down the road Sneaking into the woods beyond the girl’s camp and exploring for many hours. Poison sumac everywhere in those woods. The bats coming out at night. The arts and craft building and braiding gimp into all kinds of lanyards, key chains and necklaces. You were a real pro if you could do 8 colors!! Birch beer at the canteen. Going behind the showers (man were they cold) into the farmer’s field and eating raw corn on the cob. The camp Olympics vs the girls and the dances! The minstrel show (I am definitely somewhere in that picture from 1961) and the ridiculously corny German submarine routine we performed. Well hope that stirs up some memories for others. Hi all, what a treat to find this site ! Myself and syblings went to Camp Cedarcrest in the early 60's. Mom had just died, house burned down, and Dad just didn't know what to do with all of us, so summer at camp was the best solution. Great memories, volley ball, archery, ....and church every morning, the smell of the hot chocolate and scrambled eggs and cold toast. I can still smell them some mornings ! I remember a good friend from there, GINGER CALHOUN, anyone know her? We stayed in touch for a while, she lived in South Boston. A councilor , a wonder woman who was going to become a nun, Margo was her name. I took a special liking to her, she was a great comfort after my mother passing. That truck, and trip to the Myle Standish Forest ! Anyone remember the camp song???? I have sung it many times to kids ! They roar laughing. I can still see, my brother and sister on stage dancing the poka together at one of the shows ! GREAT MEMORIES !!!! Miss those camp fires. I recently met someone who remembered exactly where the camp "had been", we drove around...nothing is the same, but memories still linger there..new homes, new roads, can't take them away, you can almost hear the kids still cheering for each other when on every other Sunday we had races and games ! Those were the days...why don't our kids or grandkids know those days?? I am sorry that "Bill" didn't have the same experiences that most did. Anyone wants to go down memory lane..email me. I grew up at Bluefish cove. The house that is now changed was 27 cove st. I was just back there for a visit and the house is new style but to me it dosn't fit in with the place. Wish that I could have owned the place. I was just a kid at the time going to elementry school and Then High school there. Even that has changed. I remember the Galligans, O'Neils Phinies and many others. It was great to see the place again and growing up there. Maybe some day I will be back there again.

Another Cedar Crest celebrity was Paul O'Keefe.....1962 camper who also played Patty Dukes brother on the Patty Duke Show. I wonder if either Paul appeared in "real" theater........the camp's end of year Minstrel Show? Now THAT was show business !!

I can remember in the late 50's we used to love it when our folks drove us up from Kingston, where we lived, to Brant Rock to buy some goodies from Estes. I always loved the checkerberry popcorn bars and both I and my sister were really fond of the salt water taffy...specially the peanut butter filled ones! I was always fascinated by the Coast Guard tower and my mother told stories about what the war was like on the home front in Duxbury.

Winder if you old time Brant Rockers recall Mrs Gasett's Gift Shop - when she retired to Mt Dora, Florida, my mother (Nona Leonard, who had Brant Rock Rentals next door) moved the gift shop into the store. My mother and father moved to Charlotte County in 1961 and soon brought with them lots of Brant Rockers, imcluding Mrs. Tingley (Mommies). My mother used to teach exrecise and dance at Blackman's Point Trailer Park. My mother was still teaching dance in Tampa at age 93 when she died. Does anyone recall the Sunset Record Hops we kids ran behind Mommies?

Great surprise to hear from Kathy Percy......As with other CCC'ers we've contacted, many happy memories from back in the day. The dances really were great.......except for "leave room for the holy ghost !" Rich Michalski and I have managed to contact quite a few alumni , campers, counselors , waitresses, kitchenboys, even neighbor's of the camp. We even visited the inside of the waitresses cabin last spring ! The waitresses graffiti is still up in the rafters.....it was like an archaeological dig . Hi WOW!! It was so GREAT to read all your comments & memories from Camp. My name is Kathy (Percy) My grandmother was Nina Sullivan the Camp cook. I really miss her she's been gone a long time from cancer but she was the BEST!! Although I remember her chasing a few of you kitchen boys out there, with a long paddle!!!! I still can see Hughey in that milk room & Richie M. sitting in front of that old toaster (half asleep) buttering the toast, Mike Naughton maybe picking the chickens for my Nana's delish creamed chicken & peas !! I also remember Debbie, Ginny Chris Miller, Billy Dunn, Peter Iovanna, Larry Doucette, even though I was a little younger they were still great times for me. The bonfires, minstel shows (they were really great for small time talent!!!, But for me the Dances were the BEST. Rickie M. you were a really great dancer for a tall guy!!. Always was a big thing for the girls to sneak out & meet out with the kitchen boys!!! I remember also when Mike M., Rich's little brother, came to the camp. That bumpy ride to the Roller skating rink & green harbor beach singing all the way. GREAT times!! I am sorry to have missed the Marshfield fair this year as I just found out about it, I really hope you all have it again next year as I would definitely try to be there. So many more people & memories , Mrs. Bowen, The Sheas, Mrs. M, Msgr. Hartigan, the canteen, with great soda , that little gas station that was supposed to be off limits, HA HA!! Thanks for letting me go down memory lane!! Hope you are all well!!!

My Father (deceased), Harold 'Larry' Jordan Jr attended Camp Cedar Crest in the 50's. He was from Everett, MA and his parents had a cottage in Green Harbor, MA. He married my mother, Maureen Frances Hawe (Everett, MA) in 1966. I believe she attended CCC as well. In 1967, they moved to Marshfield, MA, where my mother still resides. HI, I AM Frannie Burke. I started as a senior camper. I then became a waitress. Can't remember many names then. I do remember Richard Michelski. He use to give me a hard time when I would pick up items for the boys side of the lunchroom because they would eat it so fast and before I could turn around, it was gone and I had to go back and get more. Once I spilled a whole dish of sugar in front of the boysin the mess hall. They all clapped. I then became a counsel for St. Anne's cabin. I remember Lydia Murray and her sister Linda Murray. Was a counselor with Mary Theresa. Still hear from Miss Pat and Mary Reiling. Remember the good old days on the back of the red truck going to the beach and out rollerskating on Thursday nites with the waiters and waitresses and skating to "I'm Henry the Eighth I Am", etc. Remember the field days on Sundays against the boys camp and Mrs. Michelski bringing ice cold water buckets to the field to cool us off. The Minstel shows were great and Movie nite also. Also remember standing to taps for flag raising and lowering. Have pictures of those days also. Would love to hear from anyone from those years. Camp Cedar Crest - how could I forget, although it's been some time since 1957 & 58. My brother and I went. We hated it at first, and then we loved it! I remember the National Anthem or taps when the flag was raised and lowered. We had boxing night, and I fought twice .... my older brother once. I could have killed him, but I held back! (hahaha) Oh, and the canteen, the rides in the truck to the beach, and saying the rosary. Wow! I think that's the last time I said it. I did like the Columban Father's counselars: Father Connington was great! My brother & I are from Mattapan. Another thing I remeber was the "corn field" where kids were suppose to have run away through. It was said that you had to watch out for the farmer, since he'd shoot you with "rock salt." Boy .... what memories. We have only "ONE" picture from those days. My brother is Frank Florio, and I'm Kevin. Thanks everyone for their contributions to my memories!

Hi! I went to Camp Cedar Crest around '57 to '63, eight weeks each year. I was a camper and then waitress...boys dining room, thrilling at first, but so much fun! I remember the Minstral Show. I was an endman and sang "Rufus, Rastis, Johnson Brown", still remember word for word. I was quiet and my family was so pleased to see me on stage singing and having the TIME OF MY LIFE! I remember Mary Reiling and Sheila, my very first counselors, who taught me to play softball; volleyball; archery; make gimp bracelets/necklaces/leather wallets; and hot plates w/colored stones (which I still have). I remember Mrs Hughes (waitress cabin), taught me to crochet a popcorn throw; Mrs. Thompson (Ginny & Neil); Miss Hartigan; Miss Mary Bowen; Mrs. Michalski, camp nurse; Al Donaldson; Rose & Connie; Mrs Sullivan, camp cook; and Monsignor Hartigan whom I so loved. He awarded me Camper of the Year 1960 I think. My first award ever!!! Gave me so much future confidence. I remember the open truck - no seat belts for us - going to the beach and roller skating at night (what a first time thrill). I remember the dead sand shark we took home from the beach and Elaine, etc. put IT in Mrs Hughes' bed. We got in a little trouble, but what fun! I remember Pat Morin; Pam and Pat Kelley; Ginny and Neil Thompson; Gloria and Elaine from Everett; (Rita & Janet D'Ambrosio; Diana & Janet D'Ippolito) all from the North End, Boston where we all attended "Julie Billiart High School", North End, Boston. I remember choc. covered hash balls/meatballs (Hughey had something to do with this?) I remember smoking a Kent cigarette (first time) with Rita & Elaine in back of our cabin when Elaine stepped on a rusty nail and Mrs. Michalski, camp nurse had to remove it and administer a tetnus shot. We were in trouble. I learned how to shave my legs; put on makeup; and just be a girl having, once again, THE TIMES OF MY LIFE.

Well, I never knew where Camp Cedar Crest was located. I went for two weeks around 1945. We lived in a housing project in Cambridge and my mother wanted us to have a fun, safe time. I never knew where it was and all that I can remember is being in the back of a truck bumping along to the ocean. I went to another camp somewhere on the south shore and it was an army camp where the boys and girls were seperated by a big field. They had loud speakers and a store where they sold candy. I was there when the war ended and everyone was jumping, running and crying in the big open field. Enjoyed reading the emails.

I spent my summers at Brant Rock and they are my fondest memories. My sister and I were just emailing each other about we wish that the two of us could have a meatball sub from Penny's. I have never had a better one since. While on vacation my mom and dad would send the oldest to get coffee at Charlies and bring back to the blankets, then when each one of us got to a certain age that kid went up to get them and we thought it was such a grownup thing to do. On Sundays it was the same thing but we would get homemade donuts at Mommie's, oh i can taste them now. Then on the sad day of leaving we would get to stop at Buds and get penny candy to take home. I can still see the lineup of the candy and the little bags that we filled. Of course there was Popcorn, potato chips and taffy at Estes Kitchen. Then the movies and bowling alley oh that was so much fun. I can still remember sitting on the steps of the bowling alley. One year we rented on top of Eli's now that place was one of a kind. Then when we got older we went to the Rexicana Ballroom. We didn't have alot of money but it didn't matter those vacations mean more to me than anything i have ever done in my life. It was family time with great friends and so many laughs.I wish every kid could have a childhood that we had. Now we spend our summers at Blackman's Point and still loving it. .

Although I grew up in "Marshvegas" actually Ocean Bluff, I did not attend Camp Cedar Crest. I do remember the camp grounds. Fond Memories of Buds Bait Shop and the large variety of Penny Candy. I was very fortunate to know Bud as well as his family. Dates of memory, The burning of the Brant Rock theatre and bowling alley (I could have sworn that the alleys were uneven)The Fire at the Rex (many sundays spent there listening to The Second Society) as well as the blizzard of '78.

My grandfather was one of the founding trustees of Camp Cedar Crest. The camp was a great part of my family's life and is why my family came to Marshfield. As a child my grandparents lived next door to the camp on top of the hill. Every spring the family would all help get the camp ready. Connie Shea, Mary Bowen, John Danahy, Earl Gallant, Dick Hickey, Nina Sullivan, Monsignor and of course "Ma" Hartigan. I knew them all. We had free reign over the place all summer and winter. I was a kitchen boy the last summer the camp was open. Monsignor used to show me photo albums he had of the camp from the day it opened until the end. My parents met through the camp. Does anybody remember Dan or Frank Dooley?

Charlie's Too has been in Pembroke for about 10 (maybe 15) years now - owned by the same family and has mostly the same style menu. Ya, the view (totally uneventful) is disappointing, but I bet the property insurance premiums are easier for the owners to swallow.

Finally I was a counselor, then taughter ceramics where a met a seminarian, "Tex", who I am married to now, and then I was the Head Counselor went the camp closed. I loved the summers spent there. I went to Camp Cedarcrest with my family. My mom, Rose, was a Camp nurse/ waitress councelor, brother Joseph and Michael were campers and kitchen workers. I remember Peter Iovanni and Larry Doucett and Mrs Sullivan the cook. We spent 14 years at camp form '54 to '68. Enjoyed every season and especially the Minstel show at the season end. Sang Dapper Dan as an endman. Met many great people and couln't imagine being anywhere else for the summer. The beach was always welcome and the water was cold. Richard Michalski Went to Camp Cedar Crest from 1953? to 1968. Started as a very "Midget Camper" and moved up to assistant chef toward the end. Survived most of it and have many fond memories. I always thought seminarians were "Holy people", can remeber kneeling on a broomstick for hours if I talked after lights-out. The camp was a real place to grow up and learn alot about life. My mom was the waitresses couselor and later the nurse, Mrs. Mich or Rosie to here friends. She's passed now but always remebered the good days at camp. Good friends were Peter Iovanni, Larry Doucette and Hugh Morgan. Was also in the Minstrel show and played the host "Mr. Interlocketer" the last year. What a thrill. We were feeding 400 people 3 meals a day during the peak years.My Vespa saw many happy miles around the camp and nearby beaches. Regular trips to Herbies, the Pantry Shelf, Duplex and of course A&W were part of the tour. Hope other folks who were there remeber those "Carefree Summer days" and add to the website. I REMEMBER BILL HICKEY BUT MOST OF THE OTHERS HAVE LEFT ME. I HAD A LOT OF FUN AND MOSTLY ENJOYED TAG FOOTBALL. MY BROTHER WAS A BOY SCOUT AND EARNED A COUPLE OF WEEKS FREE AT CAMP CEDAR CREST MY PARENTS SENT ME ALONG WITH HIM FOR A BIG $7.00 PER WEEK. WHAT A GREAT DEAL.. ALTHOUGH I DO NOT REMEMBER FR. OBRIEN I DID GO TO THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH IN EVERETT IN THE MID THIRTIES AMD LATER ST. TERESA. THIS SITE BROUGHT BACK SOME BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES WHICH WILL ALWAYS BE TREASURED. I lived in Green Harbor in the late 50's and early 60's and our neighborhood team used to play several baseball games each summer against the kid's from camp cedar crest, it was so much fun, no ump's, just kid's playing, I used to wave at the big rack truck going to and from the beach each day, great memories!!didn't know how good we had it!!

I just found this site after fooling around on the computer today. What great memories came flooding to my mind ! Things that I haven't thought about in 50+ years. The rides to the beach and back in the back of a big truck (no selt belts required) singing "100 Bottles Of Beer In The Wall". The grape soda from the canteen which I could never find again but still remember how good it tasted ! Missing home, getting mail from home and presents from my favorite aunt who sent me all kinds of good stuff ! I remember she sent me a softball one year. I can still remember opening it and the excitement I felt as I saw it ! I attended the Camp in the early 50's (I'm 63 now) and think I only have one picture from the camp. A picture of my neighbor, Peter Riley and myself with ice cream in our hands from the canteen. Thanks to all for your contributions, the site and great memories ! Terrific ! Richard

I went to camp cedar crest in approximately 1957. I remember my cabin name was sleepy hollow. I made a great friend and I rememeber her to this day. Her name was Carol Ippolito. Oh my, seems like a lifetime ago, but I remember it as one of the happiest times of my life. Georgiana

My sister Frances Crowley was a counselor at Camp Cedar Crest in 1934. My father, James H. Crowley Sr. bought a cottage owned by Father Hartigan in 1933. My Fathr brought the Boston Red Sox baseball team as a surprise to the campers. Dick Hickey was a camp counselor. I remember being invited to box with a kid from Everett--and I lost. I served as an altar boy for Father Tom Lane of Winthrop, Ma. I botched the latin--even tho I told Father Lane I remembered the Latin--and I didn't It was a wonderful Camp

From 1940(?) to perhaps 1947 I spent my summers at Blackman's Point,Trailor Camps. at Brant Rock. Oh, the memories it still stirs up even to this day. The family friends, in Pembroke, that I visited with for the summer worked for Miss Blackman, a very wealthy, elderly, spinster that lived away from the Point on the other side of Marshfield. She was a very proper,strict and frugal lady, but was always nice to me. Miss Drake was the bookkeeper and overseer of the whole place. She was an older school teacher that spent the whole summer vacation on this second job. She and I parted friendship when the second summer I was there, I was told by my elders to go to the main house and cordially greet and welcome her back. Not really wanting to waste time away from having fun I raced to the big house and hurriedly dashed into her office with " welcome back Miss",,,,,,,,, and there I stood searching my brain for her name. She looked at me perplexed and a half smile which made me more nervous and all of a sudden I blurted out with a relieved big smile "Welcome Back Miss Duck". MISS DRAKE's face dropped and turned into the worst scowl that I think I had ever seen. She thought that I had insulted her on purpose and from that day on she never spoke to me again. Lawrence Aldrich was the caretaker of the buildings and the flower beds at the entrance to the property, His mother Flora did all the linen laundry for the rooms that were rented out up over the converted barn, next to the main house, and also the linen for the cotages on the back end of the property. Although I can't remember what the rent for these cottages and rooms were, or the fees that were paid for for the trailer lot rentals , I do know that it was sure a huge money making opperation for Miss Blackman. When there would be a good, early low tide we kids would all scramble over the cement walls and down the big rocks to harvest all the kelp that we could handle in bushel baskets and then cart it off down on Ocean Street, Brant Rock, to a place that would give us three cents a bushel basket full. I don't remember what the name of the place was, but I think that they made some kind of Moss Pudding or Kelp pudding to sell. We all shuddered at the thought of having a pudding made out of the salty, rubbery, slimy stuff. ha ha In those days there was Peterson's big store on the main street that carried dry goods and just about anything that one could want both for residents as well as campers. And the favorite place for us to have lunch every Friday was Phillip's Lobster Pot. We always ordered the same thing every Friday and Marge, the owners daughter, home from college would see us coming and put our orders into the kitchen before we even were seated. We always felt so important and well received and the food was always beyond our greatest expectations. The large movie house was within a stone's throw from the store and luncheonette and was always the great treat of the week to go to the Saturday afternoon show. Like others, I, too, enjoy the pictures of the old Fieldston area. Barely a trace now remains of the old Rexicana and the Salty Horizon, but I remember them, and Sharyn, fondly.-Brian28.

I spent many summers as a child in the late 50's and 60's, i have so many fond and wondeful memories of brant rock. My grandparents owned a little place at the very end of cherry street. I use to go clam digging at low tide, and fishing for flounder with my grandfather. I still remember sitting out on the porch looking at the marsh, and the harbor, and hearing the ocean tide coming in. I loved going to 'charlies' for the best fried clams ever!! And of course the beach and walking out on the rocks. How this site has brought tears to my eyes thinking of all the fond memories of brant rock. THANK YOU SOO MUCH

I went to cedar Crest 51-54 for the month of august. Cabin 3-a, I pitched on a very good camp baseball team, Away games saved us from the dreaded truck ride to beach. Always tried to be altar boy at daily mass so I could eat great breakfasts with staff. Every time I see dirty dancing I think of the season ending show. Great memories!!

well, this brings back many wonderful memories, I worked in the kitchen for 3 summers 65-68 and I worked with Rich Michalski,Peter Leary,Mike Michalski,Steven Dooley, Bob Bishop, Billy Dunn and Hugh Morgan used to drop in unexpectedly ALL the time. Nina Sullivan was the head cook but one year we had a Mrs. Gavin.I always loved the beach at Green Harbor, Herbies gas stop on RTE. 139 and all of the fun loving waitresses etc.I remember Larry Doucette and Chris Miller etc.Still talk to local townie, Dick Stetson and wondering what happened to Bob Hunt and Billy Dunn ? I have many fond memories of all my summers and holidays at Brant Rock. To this day, I still have 2 aunts, and one uncle plus a few cousins that live there. I remember going with my brother and sister and cousins down the seawall to Charlies for fried clams and double dip chocolate dipped ice cream cones. I am sad that Charlies is gone now, but I will never forget the memories. I live in florida now and I miss Brant Rock very much. I hope one day to live close to it again. Does anyone remember a penny candy store called Buds? Emily

I lived year round down on the end of Cherry St., Brant Rock with my brother, Arthur and our grandmother, Emma Chamberlain from 1950 - 1958. My parents rented a cottage each summer from Brant Rock Central Rentals! As a child I can remember sitting in the car with great anticipation as my parents picked up the key for another week or two of wonderful summer memories! Wasn't it next to a gift shop run by an elderly gentleman who always wore a captain's hat? (or does my memory fail me?) Do you remember his name? Thanks for sharing! Webmaster McDude

My family owned Brant Rock Central Rentals in the 1950's at the corner of Ocean and the Esplanade - next to Mrs Gassett's Gift Shop. When my family Nona and Bob Leonard moved to Englewood Florida, Mrs Tingley (Mommies), Charlie McCarthy, the Mannings, and other Brant Rockers moved there too. My brother Larry (now at prof at Purdue) and I ran the Sunset Record Hops for the Jimmy Fund behind Mommies. Your photo web site is something that every small town needs - I know for I am a college history professor.

I was a camp councilor at Cedar Crest from 1959-1963. The camp was under the direction of Rev. Edward M. Hartigan. I worked with Paul Casey and Al Donaldson. Dick Hickey was the camp director. The camp was staffed mainly by seminarians from St John's Seminary but there were a few of us laymen. The canteen was run by Rose Shea, and her husband Connie did maintenance work around the camp.

Hey, I went to Canp Cedar Crest too. Twice I think. Once for a week in the summer, I do not remember what year, and once for a day I think in 1958. The day trip was the class trip when I graduated from Immaculate Conception School in Everett in '58. I even have some pictures I took from back then. If anybody wants them, send me an email. As I recall, the camp was owned by a parish priest, so we all got a good deal. Turns out, my family emigrated to Marshfield soon after, and I still live in the area. I recall it being developed, and toured the area with a fellow classmate yesterday. It did bring back some memories. Frank Sampson frank.jsam@verizon.net

I went to Cedar Crest in the late '50s. My great Aunt was Mary Bowen, the camp secretary or something. She worked for the Priest back in Woburn, MA. My brother and sister went there too. I really remember the boxing matches they allowed between kids. I was scared to death, but I had to do it b/c some kid and I got into a fight earlier in the week. I also remember jumping of the piers into the ocean. That was great fun. I also recall some kids picked on my younger brother and poured water into his bed. I woke up in the middle of the night and put a whole tube of glue into that kids hair. His head was shaved clean the next day. How I miss those adventures.

I went to Cedar Crest from '57 to '65...as a camper for the full 8 weeks '57 to '62 , a dishwasher in '63 and '64 and a "kitchen boy" in 1965. The pic of the Minstrel Show was great....I was in the "Waltz" in '64, '65 as well as an "Endman" . Those were great summers........some of the names I remember...Richard Michalski, John Cavicci, Mrs. Nina Sullivan, Mary Bowan, Chris Miller, Judy, Ginny and Mrs Thompson.....ring any bells ??

Loved the photos. My family stayed at Blackman's Point from the early 1950's until approximately 1997. My children/grandchildren loved the trailer park and Blue Fish Cove, and still return to visit.

I went to cedar crest in early 50s and was a waitress there in 1955. I took senior lifesaving there. We swam in the channel. What fun! Lived in Somerville then, and also spent summers in Hanson at Maquan Pond. Does anyone know when they got rid of the camp? I attend some programs at Vedanta Center in Marshfield. I went to Camp Cedar Crest in the early 60's. I dreaded that ride to the beach in the truck where my knees were under my chin from sitting on the benches. I remember a counselor named Gerri Cahill from Island Pond, Vermont.
