Baltimore Cemeteries - Updated 04-18-09

Baltimore is a great town for cemeteries, ranging from the unmaintained brambles of Mt. Auburn to the stunning beauty of Greenmount Cemetery. Gothic angels stand watch over Mt. Carmel, watching in silence as the yard is slowly reclaimed by the forest. I find them to be fascinating places, with many stories waiting to be told.

Most of these photos come from Mt. Carmel, with Greenmount Cemetery quickly catching up.

I have just been to Mt Carmel Cemetery today March 8, 2012. The only road you can drive on is the one to the old section where they look like the are digging up the old graves and reselling them for new ones. But the road is posted road coloses. This owner is reselling the old plots. These poor people where hoping to reat in peace. They take the cutting, weeds, trees and trash and dump it on a family plot. Them they tell you they are cleaning up. If the families who use Bayview knew that their loves ones are coming to the other side of hell to get there ashes they wouldn.t want to send the bobies The man wanted to know it I could read the names on the markers and he wasn;t happy when I said yes. So that must be the reason the families don't know what going on they say you can't read the markets. Don''t beleive it.

I am verry sorry to inform you that Mt. carmel cemetery on odonlad st is nothing like this now it is a mess I just come form trying to see my brother and could not find him there are toms ervery and grass is hi as some of the toms just dispecable I need to find some two talk to I caLLED THE NUMBER AND THEY SAID THE ANWSERING MECHINE IS off what to do now its been three weeks I been trying to contact someone this is a sorry grave yard

I also have ancestors buried at Mt. Carmel; my mother's parents and uncles. Their plots are near the back of the cemetery, closer to I-95. I also believe that plots are being resold to indigent families. Who else would want to bury loved ones in such a dismal looking place? I visit there every so often but I have to wait until the ground is dry so that I don't get stuck in the mud (as happend to me 20 years ago, when I had to get towed out).

Edna from Connecticut- I understand the frustration you have with the trees and vines, but I firmly believe the biggest danger this cemetery faces is from the current owners and managers. They seem to think the answer to the vegetation problem can be solved with a bulldozer cutting wide swaths of land down to dirt. There's already a large section towards the west end of the cemetery where entire family plots have been demolished for no reason other than GREED. I can't prove it, but I have my suspicions that plots are being resold. You can't tell me that the older sections of the cemetery have suddenly developed room for new plots, but I see more and more new graves being placed next to ones that were dug a hundred years ago. I also see new markers springing up in areas where the bulldozers have recently visited, just feet away from old stones knocked over by the old caterpillar. If your family plot is covered with vines, count yourself as fortunate. Someday they may be lost forever.

Having just visited Mt. Carmel on 1/20/07 for the second time in two years, while there have been many improvements in that time, I'm afraid that the still sad condition of the property and the jungle of trees and vines that keep me from finding my ancestors graves overshadow the beauty that can be found there through your incredible pictures. Thank you for being able to look past all of that.---Edna from Connecticut

Hi, my great grandparents on my father's side are buried at Mt. Carmel. I have been by there but I plan to go and check out where they are buried. Thanks for the pictures.

I used to live on Plantview Way in O'Donnell Heights, Baltimore--less than a mile from Mt. Carmel. Later, I lived on S. Anglesea St.--about 400 yards from Mt. Carmel. I spent many hours walking through the cemetary. It was a beautiful, well-kept place in the 1940's and 50's. Now it's all over grown with bushes and trees. I appreciate the nice photos here.

I have only been to one cemetery in Baltimore and that is the one in which Edgar Allen Poe is buried. The churchyard and cemetery are unlike any I have visited situated as it is in an urban context. I was a little disappointed by the placement of Poe's grave at the very front near the entrance. I think it would have been more mysterious in one of the dark corners. Sorry, I don't remember the name of the cemetery.

Work such as this is both beautiful and inspiring, especially for those of us who live in the Southwest, where things are still realively new. Great work with the photography.

Hi I just wanted to say how much I like your pictures I like to go to various cemetary's when ever I visit new cities. I was in Paris France a few days ago and saw some wonderful things and places. I was in Pierre La Chase cemetary the place where Jim orrison is burried and I took some photos and I was also in the catacombs wow what an interesting place . I just wanted to let you kow that I will be posting these pictures today sometime so please have a look . I hope you continue to photograph cemetarys because your wook is amazing! I think this page would be better in Black. It would add to the feel of the subject matter.
